Every driver must complete these steps for every tow. This checklist protects the driver, the company, and ensures FMCSA compliance.
🔍 Before the Tow

2.Verify your HOS log — ensure you have sufficient driving hours available
3.Confirm your CDL and DOT medical certificate are on your person
4.Verify IRP cab card and insurance certificate are in the vehicle
5.Check ELD device is functioning and synced
6.Confirm USDOT number is displayed on both sides of the vehicle
7.Review dispatch order — confirm pickup address, vehicle description, and delivery location
8.Photograph the vehicle being towed before hookup (all four sides)
9.Verify the towed vehicle's weight does not exceed your truck's towing capacity
10.Secure all safety chains and verify coupling is locked
🚛 During the Tow

2.Check mirrors every 5–8 seconds to monitor towed vehicle
3.Verify towed vehicle remains secure at every fuel or rest stop
4.Log all stops in your HOS record (30-min break required after 8 hrs driving)
5.Do not exceed posted speed limits — towing reduces braking distance significantly
6.Keep hazard lights on when traveling below 45 mph on highways
7.Avoid sudden lane changes — signal early and check blind spots
8.Document any changes in towed vehicle condition during transport
9.Contact dispatch if route conditions change (weather, road closures, accidents)
10.Keep customer's contact info accessible in case of questions or delays
✅ After the Tow
0/8 complete1.Photograph the towed vehicle at delivery location (all four sides)
2.Obtain customer signature on the tow receipt / job completion form
3.Document final mileage and any notable conditions at delivery
4.Collect payment before releasing the vehicle — do not unload until paid
5.Update job status in dispatch system to 'Completed'
6.Submit HOS log update for the completed trip
7.Inspect your tow truck for any damage or issues before next dispatch
8.Return all equipment (chains, straps, dollies) to proper storage
